Presa Canario

This formidable dog is classified by its weight, within the giant dog breeds. The general appearance of him is powerful, robust and with good proportions. According to the Presa Canario standard by the FCI, its measurements are:

Weight of the male Presa Canario 50-65 kilos and females 40-55 kilos.

Male Presa Canario height 60-66 cm and female 56-62 cm.

Origin of the Presa Canario

The history of the Presa Canario is ancient, arising centuries ago in the Canary Islands archipelago, on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife, as a result of crosses between the Majorero dog (an ancient pre-Hispanic dog), and other Molosser-type dogs brought to the islands, like the Spanish Presa. They were looking for a dog that combined the size and strength of the bulldogs, with the agility, work capacity and nerve of the rustic Majorero dogs.

In fact, it is curious that one theory suggests that the Canary Islands owe their name to dogs.

Behavior of the Presa Canario

The character of the Presa Canario is calm, very self-confident and balanced. It has a strong guard dog instinct, a role it has performed for centuries. For this reason, it tends to be reserved and distant in front of strangers, but on the other hand, with its owner it is tremendously loyal, obedient and docile.

Obviously he needs to be properly socialized and educated from a puppy, due to the great power and strength he has and his guardian instinct. It is not a dog for first-time owners, nor for people with little character, since being powerful dogs, you have to know how to handle them, with leadership, clear rules and a lot of calm. The natural instinct of these dogs tends to order, so if its owner does not behave as the leader of the pack, the dog will try to occupy that role. It is a brave, alert dog, with a protective instinct towards its own. But he is also capable of living with other pets, even smaller than him like kittens, as long as he gets used to him as a puppy.

He has a walking instinct, which is why it is necessary to give him at least one long walk every day. This is essential to keep you calm and free of anxiety. These dogs don't bark much, but when they do, their hoarse bark is intimidating.

The Presa Canario and children

In general, the Presa Canario is a good dog with children, since it is an extremely noble dog towards its own. With family he is calm and very affectionate, and enjoys spending time with his family. He is patient with children, and tolerates their play and contact well.

But as always, he will greatly influence how we have educated him, so it is recommended to start his socialization as soon as possible, teach the puppy to respect children and submit to them and understand that there are limits. It is a dog over which we must have control, since due to its size and characteristics we cannot act carelessly.

We must make children aware that the dog is a being that deserves respect, and that they should give it its space and not harass it.

Care

They are rustic, strong and resistant dogs. They require a long walk a day to stay in good physical and mental health, but other than this, they are not dogs that need a lot of activity or physical exercise. However, due to your large size, it is advisable that you have a garden or patio to be in during the day, since living with one in a small apartment or apartment can be uncomfortable.

The care of its coat is minimal, and it will be enough to brush it once a week, and bathe it occasionally.
